An Indian court has sentenced 38 of the 49 people involved in the 2008 Ahmedabad bombings to death. It is one of the largest mass executions in India.



In 2008, 56 people were killed and more than 200 injured in a series of attacks on markets, buses and public places in the Indian state of Gujarat.


The court on Friday convicted 49 people involved in the attacks. An Islamic extremist group calling itself the Indian Mujahideen has claimed responsibility for the attacks, saying they were "revenge for the 2002 religious riots in Gujarat" that killed nearly 1,000 people.


Public Prosecutor Amit Patel said that special court judge AR Patel had sentenced 38 of the 49 convicts to death.


According to him, 11 of the convicts have been sentenced to life imprisonment. about 80 people were indicted in the case, 28 of whom were acquitted, while all the convicts were found guilty of murder and criminal conspiracy.

The Samjhauta Express attack killed 68 people, including 44 Pakistanis.
