UN says North Korea launches missile program with stolen cryptocurrency

Washington: The United Nations says North Korea is funding its nuclear missile and program with cryptocurrency stolen in a cyber attack.

A report by the UN Sanctions Committee says North Korea stole 50 million in cryptocurrencies through cyber-attacks between 2020 and 2021, and is using that money to further its nuclear and missile programs.

The report further states that North Korea carried out cyber attacks on corrupt exchanges in North Korea, Europe and Asia. North Korea continues to search for materials, technology and information for overseas nuclear and missile programs, including cyber sources and scientific research.

Due to its nuclear weapons program, North Korea is subject to international sanctions and is banned from exporting coal, iron ore, copper, textiles, seafood and other commodities.

North Korea conducted seven nuclear missile tests in January, including one that was the most powerful missile test since 2017.
